Coleford, Gloucestershire
Puzzlewood - Gloucestershire An amaziing combination of eerie woodland, water eroded rock formations, moss, ferns and decaying timber, criss-crossed by a mile of footpaths. A great way to spend time with the family, where you can not only enjoy the woodland walk but also see farm animals, explore the indoor maze, let the kids loose in the playgound or simply enjoy a picnic in the grounds.

Stiperstones - Shropshire Hills
South of Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Cranberry Rock from the Stiperstones Car Park The Stiperstones are one of my favourite place to walk. The ridge at Cranberry Rock (500 metres) is a fairly easy walk from the car park (415 metres), where you have amazing 360 degree views to Wales in the west and the Long Mynd in the east. The Shropshire Way runs along the ridge between the outcrops of quartzite rock.

Charlecote Park
Warwick, Warwickshire
Baddesley Clinton Moated Manor House Visited Charlecote at the end of July on a day that had some pretty dramatic clouds. Marvellous National Trust house which offers almost endless photo opportunities around the gardens and parkland. The location right alongside the River Avon is simply stunning.

Baddesley Clinton
Solihull, Warwickshire
Baddesley Clinton Moated Manor House It must be about 10 years since I first visited Baddesley when I was still shooting on film. A great building to photograph and also has very pleasant gardens in which to walk and relax. I've replaced the original slide scans with better digital photos - including some fusion HDR.

Lyme Park
Stockport, Cheshire
Lyme Park South Front Lyme Park is a Palladian style mansion set in 17 acres of gardens surrounded by 1400 acres of parkland. It's a great place to spend the day touring the house and garden, or picnicing and walking in the park. This visit is the first occassion I've tried out HDR (high dynamic range) photography, and I must say that I'm very pleased with the results. Compensates very well for my often poor exposures!

Quarry Bank Mill
Wilmslow, Cheshire
Quarry Bank Mill Rear Elevation Quarry Bank Mill is one of the UK's finest industrial heritage sites including Europe's most powerful water wheel, steam engines in steam daily, the Apprentice House tour with period costumed guides, and the 8 acre Secret Garden. Displays and interactive exhibits in the mill tell the story of the mill owner and workers, with demonstrations of machine and hand spinning and weaving.

Blakesley Hall
Yardley, Birmingham
Blakesley Hall Front Elevation Finally managed to get over to Blakesley Hall in Birmingham at the start of July. This is a well preserved half timbered building run by Birmingham City Council with free admission. Interesting interior and room settings, geared towards school educational groups, but well worth a look.

Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens
Castle Bromwich, Birmingham
Castle Bromwich Gardens Spent a pleasant afternoon in early July at the unique (in the UK) Baroque gardens at Castle Bromwich Hall. 10 acres of walled garden on the north side of Birmingham, just off the M6 Motorway. A fascinating style of garden design which you simply can't see anywhere else in the British Isles.

Stourhead Landscape Garden
Warminster, Wiltshire
The Pantheon at Stourhead Visited Stourhead towards the end of June. A fabulous garden even on a very cloudy day. Arrived mid afternoon, but luckily the garden stayed open until 7pm! It took my family and me over 3 hours just to walk around the lake - didn't have time to see the house. Stunning vistas and endless photo opportunities.

Packwood House
Lapworth, Warwickshire
Packwood House from the Yew Garden Packwood has both an interesting house and beautiful garden, which is noted for it's unusual topiary Yew Garden based on the theme of the 'Sermon on the Mount', but also has some wonderful herbaceous borders, and all surrounded by a tranquil lake and 400 acre parkland with walks.

Sarehole Mill
Hall Green, Birmingham
The Pantheon at Stourhead Interesting working water mill operated by Birmingham City Coucil offering free admission. JR Tolkien lived opposite as a child, and it is thought that he drew inspiration from much of the landscape and landmarks in the area for Lord of the Rings.
